Call for trainees

Objectives

This Training School aims to provide intensive training in source apportionment of organic aerosol, based on the use of organic mass spectra of fine aerosols.

Topic of this Training School

The “Training School on source apportionment of organic aerosol” will focus on source apportionment of organic aerosol based on the use of organic mass spectra of fine aerosols, although other types of datasets will also be explored. Positive Matrix Factorization model, solved by ME (Multilinear Engine) will be the main tool.

The Training School is addressed to beginners, although trainees are expected to have already a general knowledge of source apportionment techniques and Positive Matrix Factorization analysis.

During the course, the trainees will learn how to run PMF with ME-2 using SoFi tool, including all the hands-on steps, such as how to import data, explore data, set the running parameters, and analyze PMF results in SoFi. During the training, trainees will have the opportunity to work on their own data (individual support provided) and will have the chance to present earlier PMF/ME-2 work, if desired.

Training sessions

The Training School will last 3 full days (15, 16, 17 February 2018).

A detailed program will be provided later. The foreseen training sessions are:

  • Overview PMF-ME-2
  • Overview SoFi
  • How to prepare your input datasets
  • SoFi tool
  • Overview on organic sources/types: how to interpret PMF results

Each participant should prepare a 7-8 min presentation on their work and interests in source apportionment on fine aerosols.

Number of grants

A total of 20 grants are offered.

Financial support

The financial support on offer is a grant and therefore is a fixed financial contribution that may not necessarily cover all of the expenses incurred during the participation in the Training School.
It will be determined by the Training School Committee when approving the grant and will range between EUR 500 and EUR 750, based on distance/travel costs estimation.

Lunch and coffee will be provided by the local organizer.

The trainees should arrange their travel and accommodation.

If an applicant applies for the two consecutive Training Schools (12-14 Feb 2018 and 15-17 Feb 2018), the total grant will be calculated accordingly.

Eligibility criteria and selection of applicants

Grant applicants should live in a COST country participating in CA16109 COLOSSAL http://www.cost.eu/COST_Actions/ca/CA16109?parties.

The evaluation of applications and the selection of participants will be performed by the Training School Committee: Chair (María Cruz Minguillón), Vice-chair (André Prévôt), Scientific organizers (Stefania Gilardoni, Jurgita Ovadnevaite), Gender Balance Coordinator (Luminita Marmureanu), and ECI Coordinator (Axel Eriksson), following the guidelines stated in the COST Vademecum.

The Training School can also be attended by a limited number of participants on their own funds, after approval from the Training School Committee.

The grantees will be informed by Grant Holder by email via e-COST.

During the Training School

The Grantee must sign the attendance list every day. Failing to do so will result in a reduction of the grant amount.

Getting to Prague:
  • By plane: the main airport is Václav Havel Airport Prague.
  • By train: the main train station is Prague main railway station (abbreviation Praha hl.n.).
Getting to the city from the airport:
  • Bus (recommended option): Bus number 119 connects the airport, either terminal 1 or terminal 2 and the underground station Nádraží Veleslavín (A green line, city centre line). The single 90 min ticket costs 32 CZK (about 1.30 EUR). The 119 line runs every 5-10 min. It takes about 20 min to the underground station Nádraží Veleslavín, from where you will be in 10-15 min in the city centre.
  • Taxi: approximately 25-30 euros from the airport to the city center, around 35 min (depending on traffic).

  • The main railway station (Praha hlavní nádraží or Praha hl.n.) is situated in the city centre, underground and trams station Hlavní nádraží (C red line and lines 5, 8, 9, 15 and 26).

Getting to the Institute of Chemical Process Fundamentals (ICPF):
  • The easiest way to reach ICPF is by the metro in combination with the bus. Metro stop: Dejvická (A green line), exit from the underground direction to Suchdol (stairs from the platform and stair from the vestibule) and about 80 m walk to the bus stop line 107 and 147.
  • The bus (line 107 and 147) runs every 5-10 min and the ride takes about 10 min to the stop Kamýcká.
  • From the bus stop (Kamýcká) it is as about 5 min walk to the ICPF. First you will cross the main street (Kamýská street), follow the Sídlištní street and turn the first left (Rozvojová street). Your final destination is the Czech Academy of Sciences site (Rozvojová 2/135) ahead.

Getting to the ICPF from the airport:
  • The easiest way to reach ICPF is by the bus number 119 to the underground station Nádraží Veleslavín (A green line), change to the metro (direction Hostivař) and go to metro stop Dejvická further info see the instructions above.
Additional transport info:

If you are planning to use public transport during you stay in Prague, you can buy the 24h ticket for 110 CZK (about 4 EUR) and/or 72h ticket for 310 CZK (about 12 EUR). These tickets are valid for the Prague city area (Zones P) including the metro, trams, Prague public transport buses (lines 100 – 299 and 901 – 915), the Petřín funicular, ferries and selected railway line sections.

The metro runs daily from 4:45 am to midnight.

ICPF is located in the NW suburb of the Prague city (Suchdol discrict), but easily reachable from Prague city centre. In the vicinity of the institute there are these two hotels:

Final recommendation:

Prague is NOT a dangerous city, but pick-pockets are common in the city center. Please take good care of your belongings during your entire stay!!
